Readin' and Writin'

I received this email message yesterday from a teacher in my district. Teachers wonder why people don’t treat them like professionals.

If we could set this up formally afterschool and provide either PD credit of stipends I think there would be insentive to come. Every math teacher in the building is going to be overwhelmed and need all the support they can get so that they will imbrace all the efforts being made through the adoption, not to mention the work Carla and John have put into trying to make this happen. We are going from the dark ages to the 21st century at warp speed if everything goes as planned. After everyone gets there feet wet I would like to see it become a sharing session where teachers would take turns presenting to the group their own activities and things that are working for them.

  1. I attended an online facilitator session at eTech on Wednesday. The trainer stressed the importance of correct grammar and spelling in all emails and assignments. We were told to use correct punctuation and to not use “leet speak” or use IM spellings. We were told to communicate in a professional manner at all times, especially in communication with colleagues, administration and parents. If I received a message like the one above, I would question the teacher’s credentials and would hope that my children do not have him/her as a teacher.

  2. At least I hope that teacher isn’t involved in the language arts! 🙂

One small nitpick, we are in the 21st century now, and have been for 7 years! I’m surprised at the number of people that believe technology is a new thing. The world wide web turned 15 last year, and the personal computer turned 30! That’s longer than most teachers have been in their profession.
